Book Review: The Light Between Oceans

It's taken me less than two weeks to finish this novel. When a book is good, I can't put it down. I fall asleep reading it and wake up and reach for it and read it for hours if I have nothing else to do. I'm sure that I would have finished it much quicker if I didn't have things to do.

This was a book that takes you on an emotional ride. It's about two people who fall in love and try to make a life together, but they bump into so many obstacles and their story is sad and heart wrenching. A lighthouse is central to the story. There's so many significances with regards to the lighthouse, it's a beautiful metaphor.

All it took for me to want to read this book was the amazing front cover. It's the night sky that I fell in love with and then when I started reading, I couldn't put it down. How hard it must be for anyone to go through anything that is described in the story. I found myself tearing in a lot of places, but particularly the end. This novel has worked it's way into my top 10 novels. I think it's well worth the read.

Book Review: The Infernal Devices, Cassandra Clare

In the space of about 10 days, I've read all three books in The Infernal Devices Trilogy. The simplest reason is that, I was drawn into the story and couldn't get out until I had finished it. The Infernal Devices tells the story of a world well known to us, but filled with all sorts of supernatural beings as well as humans, who are referred to as 'mundanes'. It is a book set in Victorian England, which just adds to the mysticality of it all because we're imaging a time we weren't there for. Clare describes places and people so well, you're left with a movie in your head and you feel like you know the characters personally and you feel what they feel.

I can't find the words that would accurately tell you about this book. It's about Shadowhunters and Downworlders, it's about love, and sacrifice and about ties that bind that are more important than anything in the world. It's a literary beautiful piece of work that draws upon a lot of other literature and makes books important.

I personally think you should just read it, you should fall in love with the characters on your own. You can gasp and cry and laugh without me telling you what happens. It's not just about love, there's a war happening and we all know good stories come from love and war.

Book Review: The Fault in our Stars, John Green

This entire post will be a spoiler alert so if you don't want to know, don't read it.

The thing about John Green is that he writes all these beautiful words and makes you fall in love and then he takes it away in the most beautiful way he can imagine and you're left there wondering what the hell happened and how you got so involved in something that you were just reading. Even though it's sad, it's still funny and there's a sense of normality to it. He adds humour to make it okay that something really bad has just happened.

The Fault in Our Stars is about a group of young adults who have different kinds of cancer and they go to a cancer support group. It's at this support group that a girl finds a boy and they fall in love. It's all very tragic because they know that their time might be up. So they make the best of what they've got. Then it's all about probabilities and time. And in a likelihood to survive in an 80-20, you'd think you were in the 80% side, then you're not. Then you realise that John Green's right, "Time is a slut, she screws everybody."

If you read this book, prepare for a rocky ride. Bring tissues. Don't fall in love with the characters.

Just when you think everything is okay, it isn't.
